South Africa's Whale Coast stretches from Gansbaai in the south to St Helena Bay on the West Coast, with Hermanus in the centre. Courting, mating and calving whales frequent the waters between June and November. Most commonly seen is the Southern right whale, but Humpback and Bryde's whales have also been sighted.

Hermanus boasts some of the best land-based whale watching in the world. Walker Bay has become the nursery and breeding ground of the Southern Right Whale, and can be seen as close as 10 meters from shore, breaching, sailing, spy hopping and lob tailing and playing with their babies. Hermanus also boasts the world's only whale crier, who patrols the streets blowing his kelp horn and alerting you to the whereabouts of the whales.
